GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation

The GMAC MBA letter of recommendation template is used by over 40 best business schools in the US including Cornell Johnson, Darden Virginia, Dartmouth Tuck, Duke Fuqua, Emory Goizueta, ISB, McCombs Texas, McDonough Georgetown, Mendoza Notre Dame, Michigan Ross, MIT Sloan, Olin Washington, Stanford, Tepper, UCLA Anderson, UNC Kenan-Flagler, Vanderbilt Owen, Yale SOM.

Section 1: Recommender Information. Here the basic information such as name, address, relationship or the recommender with applicant and how long they were/ have been associated with the applicant needs to be filled.

Section 2: Leadership Assessment Grid. In this section, your recommender will need to rate you on 12 competencies and character traits that the school’s believe will contribute to successful leadership at the business school and beyond.The recommender also has the option to comment on the ratings they provided.

The competencies and character traits are grouped into five categories: Achievement, Influence, People, Personal Qualities, Cognitive Abilities.

Section 3. Detailed questions. This is the most important and extensive section where your recommender needs to answer detailed questions, and give specific relevant examples to support their views about you.

1. Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant’s role in your organization. (Up to 50 words)

2. How does the performance of the applicant compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? (E.g. what are the applicant’s principal strengths?) (Up to 500 words)

3. Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (Up to 500 words)

4. Is there anything else we should know? (Optional)


Berkeley Haas

1. Please comment briefly on the context of your interaction with the applicant. If applicable, describe the applicant’s role in your organization. (50 words)

2. How does the performance of the applicant compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? (500 words)

3. Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (250 words) In the Berkeley MBA program, we develop leaders who embody our distinctive culture's four key principles one of which is “confidence without attitude” or “confidence with humility”. Please comment on how the applicant reflects this Berkeley Haas value. (300 words)


Cambridge Judge

Cambridge MBA application requires a 1 to 2 page letter of reference from your supervisor.

Rate the applicant on: Integrity, ability to work with others, creativity, motivation, self-confidence, analytical skills, written communication skills, oral communication skills, leadership potential, responsibility for own actions, uantitative numerical skills.

1. Elaborate and /or provide concrete examples if you have rated the applicant as below average, outstanding, or exceptional on any of the qualities

2. Describe what you like most and least about working with the applicant.

3. Tell us about any particular weakness the candidate has compared to other peers /team members that you regularly work with.

4. Describe the applicants attitude and behaviour when working with: a. managers /supervisors; b. peers; c. subordinates.

5. Suggest what you think applicant would be doing in ten years.



Chicago Booth

Letters are typically one to three pages in length, and we ask that you address the following questions:

1. How do the applicant’s performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples.

2. Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response.



Columbia

Answer the two questions in total 1000 words.

1. How do the candidate’s performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples.

2. Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response.



Erasmus RSM

1. How long and in what capacity have you known the candidate? (375 characters)

2. What is your opinion of the candidate’s motivation and suitability for a career in senior management? (375 characters)

3. What do you consider as his or her strengths? (375 characters)

4. What do you consider as his or her principal weaknesses? (375 characters)

5. Please comment on the candidate’s interpersonal skills (Such as performance in a team environment with peers, subordinates, and supervisors) (375 characters)


ESADE

1. How long have you known the candidate? In which context?

2. What do you consider to be the candidate’s most noteworthy qualities?

3. What are the areas in which you believe the candidate needs to improve?

4. Please comment on the candidate’s potential for management. Describe an occasion in which you observed the candidate in a leadership role.

Please give us your opinion in terms of the following criteria: Leadership potential; Organizational skills; Teamwork; Maturity; Self-confidence; Creativity.

Additional Comments:

Please add information on the ratings you have assigned and make any additional comments about the applicant’s motivation, ability, leadership potential or any personal qualities you would like the Admissions Committee to take into account.

Recommenders may upload a free-form supporting letter of recommendation or respond to the ESADE MBA recommendation form questions above instead.


Harvard HBS

HEC Paris

4. What do you consider to be the candidate’s weaknesses or areas that need improvement?


IESE

1. How do the candidate's performance, potential, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)

2. Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response. (250 words)


IIMA PGPX

Letters of Recommendation only comes after the candidates are shortlisted and not during application submission. Successful candidates are required to give details of three references.


INSEAD

INSEAD MBA application requires two letters of recommendation. Here are the questions.

While the school has not prescibed any word limit, we suggest that each answer should not exceed 500-700 words

1. How long have you known the candidate? Define your relationship with the candidate and the circumstances whereby you met.

2. Comment on the candidate’s career progress to date and his/her career focus.

3. What do you consider to be the candidate’s major strengths? Comment on the facts that distinguish the candidate from other individuals at her level.

4. What do you consider to be the candidate's major weaknesses?

5. Comment on the candidate’s potential for senior management. Do you see him/her as the future leader?

6. Describe the candidate as a person. Comment on his/her ability to establish and maintain relationships, sensitivity to others, self-confidence, attitude etc. Specifically comment on the candidate’s behavior or skills in a group setting/team environment.


Ivey

1. How long have you known the application and in what capacity?

2. Evaluation of applicant: 13 questions to be marked from Excellent to Below Average with an option of Unable to Assess.

3. Based upon your evaluation of the applicant’s skills and traits, what are his/her major strengths?

4. What do you consider to be the applicant’s major weaknesses? What efforts have been made to address these weaknesses?

5. Please provide your observations concerning the applicant’s collaborative skills and ability to achieve results.

6. Please comment on the applicants personal qualities considering concern and care for others, confidence, composure and fairness.

7. If you have any additional comments that would assist the Admissions Committee in its deliberation of the applicant then please note them here.


Kellogg

1. Please comment briefly on the context of your interaction with the applicant and his/her role in your organization. (250 characters)

2. What has been the candidate’s most significant contribution to your organization? Provide measurable impact if applicable. (250 characters)

3. Kellogg has a diverse student body and values students who are inclusive and encouraging of others with differing perspectives and backgrounds. Please tell us about a time when you witnessed the candidate living these values. (300 words)

4. How does the candidate’s performance compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)

5 Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the candidate. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response. (250 words)


LBS London

Each answer has a 500 word limit:

1. How do you know the applicant? How long have you known them for?

2. What would you say are the applicant's key strengths and talents?

3. What would you say are the applicant's key weaknesses or areas for improvement?

4. How do the applicant's performance, potential and personal qualities compare to those of other individuals in similar roles?

5. What do you think this person might be doing in ten years' time? Why?


NYU Stern

1. Please comment briefly on the context of your interaction with the applicant. If applicable, describe the applicant’s role in your organization. (50 words)

2. How does the performance of the applicant compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? (500 words)
