Babson Olin Essay Tips 2016-2017

Babson's essay pack gives you a decent sized canvas to show your career visions and highlight your strengths to present a differentiated application. By giving you the freedom to pick which essays you want to answer, Babson is making it easy for you to present your most powerful stories.

Essay 1: Define Your Future: Please describe your short and long-term career goals and why they are important to you. How do you expect to leverage your experience at Babson to make progress towards these goals? (400 words or less)

Essay 1 Tips: Babson wants to know what you seek to achieve and why? And of all business schools, why Babson?

Why your goals are important to you will require you to thoroughly introspect your passions and interest areas and show the adcom the reasons behind your career path and where you see yourself in longer term. Ideally your past and future should fit nicely in certain key themes. Try to use your post-MBA long-term career vision as an anchor to tie your past, your reason for seeking Babson MBA and your desired immediate job after graduation.

When talking about why Babson, please go as granular as you can. It could be about Babson's curriculum, its campus experience, culture, research areas- make sure that whatever reasons you mention for pursuing Olin must be specific to your career goals. Remember at all times, you are convincing adcom that Babson is your means to reach your career goals.

Also note that essay prompts asks how you will "leverage"- that expects a proactive attitude and tone from you.

Essay 2: Define Your Difference: Help us learn more about the multifaceted and talented person you are by picking 3 of the 6 questions below and responding to each one in 150 words or less.

Essay 2 Tips: a) What is an innovative/creative idea or change that you are most proud of implementing personally or professionally?

A very interesting question aiming to understand your creativity and initiative. Briefly describe the context, your thought process, any challenge you faced and the outcome.

b) Tell us about a time when something in your life felt particularly challenging and how you were able to respond to that challenge.

Clearly describing the challenge and why it was so is critical to have the reader empathize with you. There is hardly much space for you to show elaborate thought process but briefly show what you thought and how you acted. Also capture the outcome of the situation- how it transformed you and if applicable, how others responded.

c) Tell us three random things about you beyond what is already apparent from your application.

Better to not pick random things completely randomly! Be strategic. Pick aspects of you that would be pleasant, positive yet surprising. There are many facets to your personality and interests- pick those that enhance the quality of your candidature.

d) Describe the most constructive feedback that you have received and how you implemented this into your personal and/or professional life.

If possible, choose a feedback from your recent past and use better part of 150 words to talk about how you have learnt from the feedback and implemented positive changes in your life.

e) Describe a time when you were curious about something. What did you do to satisfy that sense of curiosity?

Another super interesting question! Show them your intellectual vitality, your passion for learning. Demonstrate to what extents you can go to quench your thirst for knowledge. You are taking a significant step in your life with a full-time MBA, so show them your passion for learning runs deep.

f) Which of the Babson program learning goals do you find most appealing and why?

Babson's six learning goals are: Entrepreneurial Thinking and Acting; Social, Environmental, and Economic Responsibility; Self and Contextual Awareness; Functional Depth with Integrative Ability; Managing in a Global Environment and Leadership and Teamwork. Based on your personal inclination and career aspirations, choose one that resonates most with you. Keep it aligned with your vision of your future to make a compelling argument.

Optional Essay: If you feel that there is any additional information that would add value to your application, or if you would like to address any extenuating circumstances (i.e., gaps in work or academic history, choice of recommenders, academic performance issues, etc.), please use this essay as an opportunity to do so. (250 words or less)

Optional Essay Tips: Although the adcom gives example of weaknesses, don't be mislead to talk only about the negatives. You could write about certain impressive contributions or qualities that you could not capture in the other essays. If showing certain aspects of your personality, career or life adds to the value to your application, you could write this essay. Do not write this essay if you think quality of rest of your application is suboptimal. If that is the case, improve your other essays first.

Alternately, use this essay to explain shortfalls in your application which you feel are truly detrimental to your candidature. Absence of recommendation from current supervisor, areas of underperformance (academic or professional) or events which stick out (gaps in your resumes or second MBA) or application issues (reapplications) can be commented on if you have explanations that are intelligent and credible.

Whether you decide to showcase your strengths or address your weakness, it might be better to not do both of these in the same space. Pick one aspect that you think will truly enhance your application.
